Tulsa, OK is generally a bad place to be poor. Public transit is terrible and there are no sidewalks in many areas of town. Though there are dozens of "ministries" and other charities headquartered here, most religious organizations are ultraconservative and ascribe to a "hand up, not handout" philosophy that makes scrounging difficult.
Tulsa is a segregated city in many ways. "North Tulsa", which is anything north of Admiral, is considered the Black part of the city. Everything in North Tulsa is second-class. The streets are poorly maintained. There are fewer large grocery stores and other businesses. In a similar way, "East Tulsa" (between Mingo Avenue and the city of Broken Arrow and between 11th and 41st Streets) is a mixture of Hispanic and South/Southeast Asian inhabitants.
"South Tulsa" is typically suburban. "Midtown" is a mixture of college rental housing and creeping gentrification. The rich live mostly in an area called "Brookside" which extends east and west from Peoria Ave between 15th and 41st Streets. Downtown Tulsa proper is slowly recovering from years of neglect, and the warehouse districts in its northern section are filling with hip restaurants, clubs, and boutiques.
West Tulsa, across the river, is almost a separate city, with its own neighborhoods.
